Largs businesses and tourism destininations are missing out due to limited bus services over bank holiday weekends, a councillor has warned.

Conservative councillor Todd Ferguson has told the News that he is unhappy that Stagecoach bus services on Bank Holiday Monday between Largs and West Kilbride only ran every two hours - with the last bus going north from West Kilbride at 2.30pm, and the last southbound service leaving Largs at 3.09pm.

Traditionally Easter Monday and May Day holidays are the busiest in Largs as the tourism season kicks off. An extended Sunday service was offered on Easter Monday - but the first May Day saw bus services finished by mid-afternoon.

Cllr Ferguson said: "We need a public bus service in place which has access to towns and gets the economy going again and gets people moving.

"We want to see a thriving community and reduced bus services on bank holiday weekends seems completely counter productive.

"This is why there have been discussions at local government level at a community owned bus service to address these issues as people need to access facilities - and for cafes, bars and restaurants and other businesses to thrive."

Cllr Ferguson says he will raise the matter with his party colleague, Conservative West of Scotland MSP Jamie Greene, adding: "I will also be writing to Stagecoach to see about improving the services on bank holidays as a limited bus service is deterimental to businesses."

The Bank Holiday service reflects the Sunday service meaning that there are limited services on offer to and from Largs on two of the three days on each holiday weekend.
