Police officers in Ayrshire are warning residents to be vigilant when removing cash at ATMs.

The force says criminals can try to distract ATM users in order to steal bank cards and cash.

A spokesperson said: "Criminals try to distract ATM users by asking for directions, starting fake stories or tapping their victim on the shoulder so that they can steal bank cards, cash and personal items.

"We are working with Crimestoppers Scotland and LINK to raise awareness of ATM distraction theft so you can spot the signs and speak up, 100 per cent anonymously, to the charity if you have any information about the criminals behind it."
