Memories of a historic day when the Royal Yacht Britannia passed Largs many years ago featured in an archive newspaper.

Talented local photographer Ian Dalgleish read with interest a News feature about the unexpected arrival of the Royal yacht Britannia in the Largs Channel in August 1958.

Teacher Ian said: “I assume that was the day my father came rushing home, out  of breath, to tell the family that the ship was coming down the Clyde past Largs.

"I grabbed my Brownie 127 camera and ran down John Street just in time to take the  photo which you can see here.”

Her Majesty's Yacht Britannia, also known as the Royal Yacht Britannia, is the former royal yacht of the British monarchy.

She was in service from 1954 until 1997.

The vessel was the 83rd Royal Yacht since King Charles II acceded to the throne in 1660, and was the second royal yacht to bear the name Britannia, the first being a racing cutter built for the Prince of Wales in 1893.

During her 43 years of service, the yacht travelled more than a million nautical miles around the world to more than 600 ports in 135 countries.

Now retired from royal service, Britannia is permanently berthed at Ocean Terminal, Leith and is a popular visitor attraction with more than 300,000 visits each year.
