A huge US Navy ship has docked at Hunterston as part of Exercise Formidable Shield.

The USNS Joshua Humphreys arrived in the area on Sunday morning after travelling from Norfolk, Virginia.

The Joshua Humphreys is a replenishment ship similar to UK RFA vessels Tidespring and Tidesurge, which are regular visitors to the Hunterston Jetty.

The ship first entered service in 1987 and travels around the world supporting the US Navy and allies with supplies.

The Joshua Humphreys has a crew of 103 US Navy and merchant sailors, and can carry the equivalent of 180,000 barrels of fuel.

Exercise Formidable Shield will see vessels, aircraft and soldiers from multiple nations train in the North Atlantic.

The exercise runs from May 8 to 13, and will give nations and units practice of working together with live fire exercises against ballistic and air targets.
