A Largs butcher has launched a new delicacy - cappuccino burgers - in tribute to the town's coffee shop status.

Given the town is well-known for its plethora of cafes including Nardini's, The Bagel Basket and the Gypsy Cream, the local butcher decided to come up with the novelty burger to tempt the tastebuds of keen locals - but it also captured the eye at the Scottish Craft Butchers award.

Scott Paton, owner of the long established AD Paton's, based in Aitken Street, came up with the idea during a brainstorming session, he revealed to the News.

And it has already proved to be a hit with judges after it received a silver award at the recent Scottish Craft Burger Speciality Awards.

Scott said: "We went up to the Craft Butcher awards, and we put in six entries and we got six awards for them - four golds and two silvers.

"We had the cappuccino burger, Mexican burger, spicy Thai burger and some haggis products.

"The cappuccino burger was one of our own steak burgers and we were trying to think out of the box for these competitions. And we added some cappucino powder into it and it tastes very nice.

"You can taste the coffee and the sweetness of the cappucino through it.

"You could even have a cuppa with it.

"It was just to try something different and we wanted to put something out there that was really quite unique - and  I think it certainly ticked this box - and was popular with the judging panel too."

Other gongs were received by Patons for Mexican burgers, salt and chilli chicken stuffed with haggis, a haggis lasagne and a Thai burger which included pork and various Thai spices.

AD Paton Butchers and Licensed Game Dealers of Largs is a family owned business formed in 1840. It has continually traded in various locations in the town for 169 years and is now run under the stewardship of Scott Paton, the fifth generation to run the business with a staff of five to assist.
