Concern has been expressed over a surge in crime in Largs which has seen police respond to 12 reported break-in incidents over the past month.

The town's community council has spoken out on the matter and is seeking a meeting with police to discuss it and gain assurances.

A total of three arrests have since been made following the incidents, which have seen shop and domestic properties allegedly being broken into during the crimewave.

As reported earlier this week, a man aged 38 was apprehended and charged in relation to the alleged crimes in relation to break-in attempts at Superdrug and Halliday Pharamcy in Largs town centre.

It can now be revealed that the same individual has been charged with a spate of other alleged incidents in the town including entering property in Phillips Avenue with intent to steal, and stealing items from Eastern Avenue, Glenburn Crescent and Brisbane Road, which all happened on May 16.

Meanwhile, a 41 year old man has been charged in relation to number of incidents including smashing a window in Tron Place, and entering and stealing items.

He has also been reported to the procurator fiscal in relation to smashing a window at two sepearate locations in Mackerston Place with intent to steal.

And a 33 year old was arrested for breaking into two properties in Waterside Street.

The figures were revealed at last night's Largs Community Council meeting, where concerns were expressed about the high number of break-in attempts.

Margaret Wood, who chairs the police sub-committee group, said: "The amount of break-ins does seem quite extraordinary. It is very concerning. I am seeking a meeting with the police to discuss it.

"It cerainly seems a big issue."

Community councillor Jim Perman pointed out that it seemed that there were only two or three individuals involved and they have since been apprehended.

Chairman Jim Phillips asked Margaret Woods to report back on her meeting with police, to which she agreed.
