LARGS Library is closed to the public today (Monday, May 22) after a fire in the building at the weekend.

Fire crews were called to the building early on Saturday, May 19, before the library was due to open to the public.

Community groups who use the library have been told that the building will be closed on Monday after a fire in the gents toilets which led to smoke damage in the rest of the building.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue spokesperson confirmed the incident: "We attended Allanpark Street at 8.05am on May 20 in relation to reports of smoke from within the building and we did extinguish a small blaze."

A spokesperson for North Ayrshire Council said: “Unfortunately, there was a fire in Largs Library on Saturday, May 20.

“The fire was discovered before the library opened to the public and, thankfully, nobody was hurt.

“The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service attended the incident and the fire was quickly contained.

“The library will remain closed today – Monday, May 22 – for council staff to carry out safety checks and to allow for a deep clean of the building.

“We will reassess the situation today and will advise the public of a likely reopening date.

“Library services continue to be available in Fairlie, Skelmorlie and West Kilbride, and are also accessible 24/7 via our online service."
