This striking photo from 53 years ago shows when top competitive cyclists amassed on Largs seafront for the launch of the Largs-Dumfries leg of the Milk Race.
Town Provost William Donald, resplendent in kilt, waved off the cyclists with the Lion Rampant flag to set them on their way on Largs Promenade, opposite Nardini's.
Woycech Matusiak (Poland), who is now 77, was the individual winner of the race, which finished in Ayr, and the team winners were Czecholosvakia.
The overall distance of the leg was 171km.

It was an exciting year, with colour TV sets becoming more popular as Jon Pertwee took on the mantle as the new Doctor Who, while sounds of the era included 'Bridge over Troubled Water' by Simon and Garfunkel, and Elvis Presley's 'The Wonder of You'.
Routenburn Golf Club was hosting its Christmas Show, which included one of the doyens of the Largs Players in Joan Rae (see below).

The girls of S1114 class at Largs High School were about to enjoy the last of their series of 'Dinners and Diners' meals as they prepared to leave school the following month. All the preparations for the meal was done by the girls themselves. Pictured were Rosemary Ratcliffe, Elizabeth Chalmers, Elizabeth Fisher, Linda Nisbet, Leslie Holland, Deborah Elliot, Sheila Bach and Brenda Osbourne.
