Largs Thistle legend George Wall writes for the News about football matters local, national and international...

Two Scottish Cup finals coming up. Cumnock v Rutherglen Glencairn and Celtic v Inverness. Two games you would think should be won by the Premiership teams, Cumnock and Celtic. Although I would like to see the underdog win, I just can’t see past the favourites - but then again, 29 years ago when Largs won the Scottish against Glenafton we were the Second Division team going up against a top league team with great financial backing. Could it happen again?

A surprise to me this week was Andy Leishman, the long serving goalie at Auchinleck Talbot, leaving the club. Andy has been a big player for Talbot over the years. Word on the street is he is off to Darvel.

Well, Partick Thistle fairly gave a “doing” to Ayr United in the play off, winning 8-0 on aggregate. An outstanding performance from Partick. They now go up against Ross County, a massive tie for both teams. Partick are playing well but can they keep it up? I am going for Ross County. Albion Rovers dropped out of the SPFL last weekend after losing the play off to Spartans and now their name could be lost to Scottish football, with a group of investors reportedly calling on the current board to resign. The investors want to rename the clubs Shamrock Rovers Coatbridge. It would be a shame to loss such a historic name in Scottish football. I just don’t see the value in changing the name.

With Spurs still on the search for a manager, it’s been reported the Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou is high on their wanted list. Would he leave Celtic after the success he has had there for a club that, albeit in the English Premiership with all the money there is in that league, seems to have major problems. Managers there just are not able to live up to their CV. Take Jose Mourinho; it’s the only club he has not won a trophy at as a manager. If I was Ange and had the choice I would be off to Leeds United rather than Spurs. Lots of passion in the Leeds support and a club into which I think he would fit well.

Largs Thistle, sponsored by Cullis Amusements, went down 3-1 to Valley Vets at Barrfields. A disappointing result in their second league game. This week the 35s are away to Ardeer.
