Shock has been expressed at a "major" spillage of raw sewage on to a local foreshore between Largs and Skelmorlie, which has been branded an environmental hazard by local residents.
Campaigner Archie Burleigh told the News that he was shocked at what he believes is an "avoidable incident".
The spillage of raw sewage flowing on to the beach is at Shore Road near Skelmorlie.
Archie, who lives nearby at The Meigle, said that it had already had a serious effect on the coastline.
He said: "Much of the beach vegetation has been killed off and there is a two-metre-wide grey film running along the Clyde for around 200 yards.
"This is also a popular area with wildlife."
Archie has contacted Scottish Water, asking for the matter to be urgently looked into, and labelled it "avoidable".
Cllr Tom Marshall said: "It needs to be tackled right away and it is a bit of a worry - maybe it is a pump failure, but the concern is that there is so little rain at the moment it is just raw sewage and isn't getting diluted.
"It needs to be addressed as soon as possible."
A Scottish Water spokesperson said: “We have received a report and the matter is being investigated.”
