Elderly people at a home complex in Largs say their front doors have been left "like a jungle", while a giant pothole in the driveway and a broken up pathway has left them "cracking up".

Residents at Moorburn Park, run by North Ayrshire Council, say they have asked the management to cut down the four-feet shrubbery and make it presentable - while other concerns about a giant pothole in the roadway inside the complex and cracking footpaths have also been raised with the 'News'.

Mary Donaldson, 76, who is speaking for a number of residents at the properties, said: "I have gone to two meetings with management but nothing has been done. Residents want to look out their windows to see the little robins and starlings as it provides so much joy but instead we are at risk of all manner of creepy crawlies coming in the window during the heat and it really is horrible for the residents to look outside."

Mary has taken matters into her own hands and built her own garden area through help from family and friends - but other ground floor flats in the complex are suffering as many people living there have mobility issues and need further help.

Marion Gallagher, also 76, said: "I know there must be shortages of some kind but look at it. The council came and cut the grass twice, which was good, but the rest of the four foot shrubbery doesn't get touched.

"There are a lot of people here in their 80s and 90s. I only came in here in November after having lived in Saltcoats - I am an ex-carer so I am in the right place, but it is just such a shame that the garden areas in front of our properties are left in this state.

"This is us in the summer weather and it is horrendous, the heat, so we have to open our windows. I just want it cut and tided up and I would be quite happy. It is ridiculous and a mess."

A petition has been set up by the residents in order to get the front gardens area presented - and Mary has also contacted Councillor Tom Marshall about the situation.

Mary added that there is a giant pothole in the drive which is a trip hazard - and added that a path between the properties is also cracking with holes and can also be liable to falls unless work is carried out to level it off.

She continued: "I have been told at recent meeting that the big holes will be repaired - there was a lady visitor who fell down the hole who said she would never come back to Largs again. It is frustrating that nothing is being done and we feel that by turning to the Largs and Millport News is our last port of call as it feels like we have to do everything ourselves.

"The window cleaner will not even come to some of the properties because of the shrubs outside the front door."

A spokesperson for North Ayrshire Council said: “We have received no complaints regarding the surface at Moorburn Park but have carried out an inspection today.

“We are satisfied that there are no safety issues but will continue to monitor the situation.

“In addition, our Streetscene team have been requested to carry out some further grounds maintenance work.”

North Ayrshire Council has been contacted for comment.
