An emergency ambulance crew struggled to get through heavy traffic congestion in Largs today, June 12.

Largs town centre is currently in 'gridlock' due to roadworks, with queuing heading northwards onto Greenock Road - and in side streets around the town centre.

Portable traffic lights are in place outside St Leonard's Guest House in Irvine Road on the A78 with Openreach and Circet UK, taking place today and tomorrow.

Meanwhile, sewer repairs works by Scottish Water are scheduled to take place in Gallowgate Street for eight working days, starting today.

Councillor Ian Murdoch contacted explained that the bottleneck is "as bad as he has ever seen it".

He said: "The whole of Largs is at standstill at midday, with queues up Aitken Street and Gateside Street as well.

"It is as bad as I have ever seen it and there is an ambulance which is also struggling to get through.

"The queue stretches back from the Morrisons roundabout right out towards Greenock Road, and I dread to think how far it goes back, but the whole town centre is a gridlock."

Councillor Murdoch continued: "I didn't expect the roadworks to take place on a busy Monday - I think they need to serious consider doing these roadworks at night as an alternative as it causes utter bedlam on busy days in Largs with so few routes in and out of the town. Nobody can move, and I myself, and many others have got caught up in it.

"I could see an ambulance trying to get through but it is very difficult - this is the thing you always worry about when you have this congestion in the town centre and I think it really needs to be looked at. We do need the roadworks to take place - nobody questions that - but the timing is important and on a busy summers day in Largs is just asking for the congestion to build and build."
