Largs Thistle 3 Kilbirnie Ladeside 0

Largs emphatically saw off Kilbirnie in an entertaining and competitive memorial cup encounter for Derek Scott.

The great man would certainly have approved of the high quality nature of the game and for his beloved team to have a trophy at the end of the match.

The purpose of the day was to raise funds for the Largs First Responders in memory of Derek, and the amazing contribution of £788.31 will help to ensure that Largs First Responders can support the local community by attending emergency calls across the district.

It was also Largs Thistle's last proper run-out before the league season begins, and Kilbirnie proved good and competitive opposition who didn't always make it easy for Largs, particularly in the opening half hour.
Thistle had the first chance as Lewis Davidson headed narrowly wide on five minutes.

Kilbirnie had some good pressing play with the Largs defence having to stay on guard. Former Largs striker Scott Lewis was playing upfront and trying to turn and twist his way into the box, and there was one scrambled clearance which resulted in hopeful claims for a penalty from the away support.

Largs were slowly getting a grip of this game though as their speed and creativity was starting to present opportunities.

Down the right, Laurie McMaster teed up the rushing Jamie Martin and he blazed his way into the box and as he took his diagonal shot which banged off the post he was taken down by Lewis Crawford's diving challenge. Will Sewell clinically despatched the spot kick on the half hour mark.

There was only going to be one winner after that as Largs went on to dominate play and the second goal arrived on 40 minutes as a deep cross to the back post was met by David Ramsay who launched himself to volley home as the keeper tried in vain to stop.

The dancing feet of Martin resulted in another illegal challenge from Crawford, and a free-kick was awarded to Largs on 68 minutes from around 22 yards out from goal. With regular free kick taker Lewis Davidson having departed the field injured, it was left to Sewell who scored his second of the game with an excellent curling free kick which arrowed into the net to add extra shine to the scoreline.

Thistle nearly added a fourth after a clever looping header from distance just glided wide.

Thistle coach Andy Scott, son of Derek, thanked everybody for turning out and supporting the memorial match for the Largs First Responders.

He said: "My dad would definitely have been smiling upstairs after that result - and not just the result, we got to grips with the game, and the pace of play and how quickly we want to move the ball and get more bodies into the box, we did a lot of things right today. I think Derek would really have enjoyed it from the set-play goals to David Ramsay's finish.

"I thought Kilbirnie were well organised - so we had to work at it. We are having to move the ball quickly as they are pressing us and in our face.

"We are still working on some areas and not quite the finished article but the pre-season is pushing us closer to where we want to be.

"That's three free kicks we have scored - two from Lewis Davidson and one from Will Sewell - during pre-season and that is also a good sign.

"It was a very physical game which is what we liked - and it is that competitive edge you need going into the new season.

"We are going in the right direction as we keep on improving.

"I would like to thank everyone who supposed this event and the golf club memorial event too that the club ran too.

"I'd like to thank the club for putting these events on - and for a great cause too as First Responders are all about saving people's lives, and it great that they came along too on the day."
