A mum has complained because she can't open her windows during the summer weather due to the placement of communal bins outside her property - and has hit out at flytippers.

Carol Gemmell has pleaded with North Ayrshire Council to find a new place to put the bins - inside the coffin area - of Seamore Street where she lives, to remove the problem, which she says is sickening.

She says she can't open the windows in her house because the communal bins have been placed outside her close.

The problem has been exacerbated by members of the public flytipping there, and on some occasions, the cleansing team then not picking up the rubbish as a result.

She says the problem is so bad now in the summer that she can't open her window for flies coming into her property, including her 11-year-old son's bedroom.

Carol told the News that as a consequence there is now more rubbish on the street than there has ever been - and is calling on the council to find somewhere else to put the communal bins - ideally in the central 'coffin' section of the street which is an open area.

She phoned the council about the issue and they are aware of her concerns and waste management were going calling her back - but she turned to the News as she couldn't cope with the issue any longer.

Carol said: "I can't open my windows because it just attracts flies, as the communal bins are right outside my close.

"I can't open any of the windows now because I fear my house will become infested with flies and it is just driving me insane.

"I can't see why they can't make space and ut the bins in the middle section of the street.

"The other problem is the flytipping - someone dropped off a fridge there the other week; I have paid for special uplifts in the past so why can't others. It is very upsetting and I am pleading with North Ayrshire Council to help me and my eleven year old son.

"There have been pillows and other items left during the past week too - it is absolutely shocking as the lid doesn't close as the bin is jam packed as things are placed there that simply shouldn't be in it."

"I need this resolved quickly."

A North Ayrshire Council spokesperson said: “We are sorry that the resident feels this way and will be speaking to them individually about their concerns.

“The communal bins have been in place since 2018. After a pilot period, residents were overwhelmingly in favour of the communal bins being introduced permanently to resolve access and litter issues caused by individual wheeled bins left outside on the pavement.

“We have several sets located on the street and unfortunately some have to be situated outside the homes of some residents.

“We have investigated the potential to create a central storage area for the bins in the grass area of the street but unfortunately this would not be feasible.

“We would urge all residents to be responsible and respectful with their waste. We will monitor the area for excess waste or flytipping over the next few weeks and also write to the residents to remind them of the correct way to use their bins."
