North Ayrshire Rangers Service carried out a rockpool study with members of the public at Largs Pencil - and was surprised to find snakelocks anemones. so close into shore.

The fun activity day was arranged by the Rangers group at the local seafront yesterday - and were taken aback by what was found close to the deep blue sea.

One of the rangers said it proved to be a very fruitful visit to the Clyde Coast, and said: "We had a terrific day at Largs, going on a Seafari and looking through rockpools.

"It was amazing to see what was lurking in the pools around the Pencil.

"Some great stuff like gobies, butterfish and even snakelock anemonies; which I've only ever seen once before in my life. We may think of common starfish as lovable denizens, but they're voracious predators."

"Many thanks to all the families who came along."
