A celebrity website has named the top ten most famous figures to have come from Largs.

As expected there are various names from entertainment and sport.

There are a few surprises, with no mention of Lord Kelvin in the survey, despite living in the town for a number of years.

Sir Thomas Brisbane also fails to make the cut - and managed a 13th placing.

And number ten may be quite an unknown to many locals in the shape of footballer Tommy Barbour (November 13, 1887 – August 29, 1967) who was a Scottish professional who played as a wing half and full back. He played in the Football League for Derby County and Darlington.

Number nine is a very familiar face in the popular Celtic and Manchester United legend Lou Macari, who grew up in the town as a teenager, before going on to make a name for himself in the beautiful game.

The 74-year-old began his playing career at Celtic where he was one of the Quality Street Gang, the outstanding reserve team that emerged in the late 1960s that also included Kenny Dalglish and Danny McGrain. He is best known for his time at Manchester United, where he played over 400 games.

He helped them win promotion back to the First Division and then played in their FA Cup win of 1977, and later returning to his boyhood heroes Celtic as manager. In recent years, he has set up The Macari Centre which  is open every day of the year for people without a home, offering a place to stay in a safe and secure environment, in Stoke.

And music appeal sees Benny Gallagher, one half of Gallagher and Lyle, make it to number eight, and still performs live, late into his 70s, with his famous pop partner Graham Lyle, who recently featured in the News in a tribute piece to Tina Turner, after co-writing her famous global hit 'What's Love Got To Do With It' with Terry Brittain, featuring in seventh spot. More about them later!

In number six is British model Andrew Stimpson, born in 1980. He tested negative for HIV 14 months after three initial tests returned a positive result, and Stimpson's case was the first to have been medically documented and tested.

At number five, we head down under to Australia as Elaine Smith features highly in the survey.

She is a Australian former actress who found fame on television series Neighbours in 1985 as original character, Daphne Clarke. At the height of its fame, 20 million people watched the Aussie soap in Britain as we followed the daily dramas of the different characters of Ramsay Street and none were as dramatic as Des and Daphne's. Elaine also visited the place of her birth in the 1980s during her Neighbours stardom.

Even though both featured individually earlier in the chart, number four features both Gallagher and Lyle together as a top ten selling music band act in the 1970s with hits like 'Breakaway' and 'I Wanna Stay with You', having also featured for the band McGuinness Flint earlier in the decade, and made a highly successful return to Largs in 2016 with 'Caledonia USA' - a theatre show by Maggie Kinloch, Largs Players and in combiation with the famous pop singing and writing duo who appeared on stage at the end of the night to perform some of their hits.

Featuring in third spot, and still very much a big name, is Daniela Nardini, the actress who broke to fame with the BBC2 legal drama 'This Life'. She featured recently with Doctor Who star David Tennant in a Radio 4 play, and has appeared in numerous TV dramas.

And in number two is Largs famous golfing son and local legend Sam Torrance, who not only won the Ryder Cup with the crucial winning putt at The Belfry in 1985 but captained the Europeans to glory in 2002.

The Largs man achieved 21 European Tour wins in his career, and has also been a proud ambassador of local charity Gillian's Satire Appeal which provides accommodation for people recovering from cancer so they can enjoy the clear air and the beautiful views in his home town.

So the number one position goes to a great of television and film who sadly passed away two years ago but his figure looms large in the world of movies - John Sessions.
