The Largs Viking Festival of Fire is on the move - for the third time in its 43 year history - as the famous battle re-enactment and fireworks display takes place in a new location for 2023.

Organisers have revealed that it is moving to an earlier time in the evening for the showpiece event, which always draws big crowds, in all weathers.

A festival spokesperson said: "The Festival of Fire on September 9 is now all happening at the main festival site, Largs Bay.

"The order and times of events have changed too.

"It will start earlier, at 7.30pm at the putting green infront of Vikingar/across the road from the RNLI station, with a re-enactment of the Battle of Largs, followed by a torch lit procession from there, along the main road, onto the promenade and back to the village, where the burning of the longboat will take place.

"This will all end in a spectacular fireworks display over the beautiful backdrop of Largs Bay.

"As all this is taking place at the main festival site, we will be keeping the market and entertainment open later."

General tickets will be available from Tuesday, August 1 via the website: www.largsvikingfestival.co.uk.

This ticket will entitle people to entry into the battle area, for a closer view of the reenactment, participation in the torch lit procession and a closer view of the burning of the longboat.

The first location for the Festival of Fire was at Largs Pencil where it stayed for many years until it was moved to Broomfields in more recent times.

Festival chairman Douglas Blair said: "We are hoping to have a slightly different torchlight procession this year including bagpipes. We had to make a change for the Festival of Fire from its previous location at Broomfields, and we hope that by having in this central area to the festival, it will be much more of a community event.

"It will have all the same ingredients and we hope it will be just as spectacular as in previous years."

The festival has had to make a number of other changes this year, including dropping the popular air show, due to the committee not receiving £30,000 from Event Scotland as it has done in previous years due to a change in application rules, but the festival hope to successfully apply next year.

As a result a new patroen scheme has been launched to help support this year's festival which runs from August 2-10 and includes the opening ceremony, entertainment stage, Scottish and contintental food markets and much more.
