Upgrades to West Kilbride cemetery are continuing at pace – with revamped public toilets next on the agenda.

Staff from North Ayrshire Council have recently refurbished the pillars at the entrance to the cemetery, alongside a fresh lick of paint on the gates and railings.

Ward councillor Todd Ferguson, who has backed a campaign by villagers to improve the look of the cemetery, said the changes have made a big difference.

He explained: “It has taken a while but we are now seeing major improvements to the cemetery, which is fantastic.

“Council staff have worked really hard to get it looking presentable, as local people have been asking about it for a long time.

“There is still work to be done, especially with the internal buildings, and the council is currently looking at upgrading them.

“They will get a fresh paint job too, so I hope the whole cemetery will be in top condition very soon.”

Largs and Millport Weekly News:

Councillor Ferguson revealed that upgrades are also due to the cemetery’s public toilets to bring them back into use.

He explained: “The council is looking to bring the public toilets back into use and get them functioning.

“It is long overdue as there are not many public toilets in West Kilbride and they are always appreciated.

“People go up there for services, so we need to have facilities on site that you would expect and that are needed.”

The councillor believes the cemetery is now looking the way it should, and is in the best condition to honour those inside.

He added: “I had done a few walkthroughs with members of the community over the years and the council has invested quite a bit of money here.

“The gates and pillars were one of the final pieces of the jigsaw to get the cemetery back to where it should have been.

“Locals have been asking for improvements for many years and it has been a long process to try and get it done.

“My personal thanks to Fiona at bereavement services, Mark at Streetscene, and everyone in the property management and investment team.”
