Largs firefighting candidates were being put through their paces today (August 22) at a special training event in Ayrshire.

The Practical Selection Tests (PSTs) are designed to assess whether potential recruits have the ability to carry out the more physical aspects of the role of a firefighter.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue spokesperson said: "Candidates from Kilbirnie, Largs and Ardrossan all attended Kilmarnock today to complete their On-Call PSTs.

"One step closer to helping protect their local communities."

Largs and Millport Weekly News:

The aim is to assess candidates' level of fitness, strength and manual dexterity as well as their level of confidence in simulated exercises.

Before candidates start each test, the assessor for each specific test reads out the test brief and detailed instructions for the test. They are then asked to confirm that they fully understand the instructions.

The tests used are: Ladder climb, ladder extension, ladder extend to lower, casualty evacuation, working in enclosed spaces, equipment assembly, equipment carrying, and hose running.
