Visitors to Largs' Viking Festival have been handed a boost after it was revealed extra train carriages will be running to the event.

ScotRail has announced it will be adding extra carriages for the festival, which runs from Saturday, September 2 until Sunday, September 10 and marks the 1263 Battle of Largs, the last mainland battle between the Scots and Norse.

Each year, the living history Viking Village is open to the public and showcases life in a 13th Century Norse-Gael village.

A ScotRail spokesperson said: "We're adding extra carriages to services between Glasgow Central and Largs throughout the day on Saturday, September 2 and Sunday, September 3 to help customers get to and from the event.

"The following weekend, Saturday, September 9 and Sunday, September 10, more seats will be added to support the Viking Festival.

"Customers should be aware that services along the route are expected to be much busier than normal.

"With queuing systems expected to be in place at key stations along the route, customers are being advised to allow extra time to make their journey."
