CalMac needs to work with the council to address the “serious levels of congestion” being caused by ferry traffic, an MSP has said.
In a letter to CEO Robbie Drummond, West Scotland MSP Katy Clark flagged concerns raised by residents about lengthy delays for vehicles boarding ferries last week, even though no operational issues had been reported. She also warned that this bodes poorly ahead of big events in September such as the Viking Festival.
The Labour MSP commented: “Throughout August, constituents have expressed their deep concern at the serious levels of congestion along Largs seafront, which has led to dangerous incidents and drivers taking risks.
“Whilst I am aware this was partially attributed to the lack of a two vessel service earlier in the month, I am not aware of any operational issues last week. Many residents have also told me were being asked whether they could travel as a foot passenger instead when trying to book a car on the ferry.
“Given the recent changes to the booking system, it is worrying that we are still seeing such lengthy queues, especially mid-week. This could cause real issues with big events planned in Largs and the surrounding area over the coming weekends.
“CalMac and North Ayrshire Council must ensure they work together to mitigate these issues, minimise traffic and keep people safe.”
