MORE than 100 staff and pupils in Largs will put their best foot forward in October for charity.

Runners from Largs Academy will complete their annual sponsored 5K run next month to raise money for Mary's Meals.

This is the fourth year the school will be doing the event, after raising more than £3,000 in previous years.

Geography teacher Gareth Atkinson, who is organising the event, has praised the pupils for their willingness to get behind the idea in their droves.

He told the News: "I'm glad to say this has become an annual event and is now firmly set in our school calendar.  This will be our fourth sponsored 5K for Mary's Meals.

"Largs Academy has a long tradition of supporting the work of Mary's Meals, and since moving to the new school building in 2018, we have raised over £24,000 for the charity, including contributions from Gift Aid and Mary's Meals 'Double the Love' campaigns.

"We are so grateful for the incredible support of all our pupils, parents and staff, as well as others in the local community who have made this possible."

The group will begin the 5K at 3.45pm along the promenade on Friday, October 6, and Gareth says staff and pupils are training hard for the big day.

He continued: "We have stressed that it doesn’t matter what kind of time they complete the 5K in - it’s about taking part and raising money for the charity.

"It's so encouraging to see so many of our students becoming passionate about charitable activities and taking such a keen interest in global citizenship and social justice.

"Any donations towards our sponsored 5K would be greatly appreciated, and if anyone from the local community wants to cheer us along our route, we would love to see you!"

The event will start and end at the Largs lifeboat station, with The Pencil marking the halfway turning point.

The fundraising target for the event has been set at £2,000, but the group are already halfway there.

Mary’s Meals sets up school feeding programmes in some of the world’s poorest communities, and the charity now feeds more than 2.4 million children every school day.

It costs just £19.15 to feed a child for an entire school year (approximately 10p per school meal), so even small donations can have a huge impact.
