The crew of the Largs lifeboat has come to the rescue of a motor boat which ran aground near Hunterston.

The alert, on Sunday, October 15, was the second call to the same spot in the course of the weekend.

The motorboat, with two people onboard, had run aground near Hunterston Power Station, in a similar location to a yacht which had suffered the same fate the previous day.

On arrival the lifeboat crew quickly decided towing was not an option, with the craft too well grounded and damage caused to the starboard engine.

The Ardrossan coastguard rescue team, which was also called to the scene, was able to walk out to the casualty vessel and speak with the crew.

Sunday's callout came the day after a yacht with eight people on board ran aground at Brigurd Spit, near the power station.

The lifeboat crew has admitted that two calls in one weekend to the same location is a "concern".

By the time the yacht in Saturday's alert was located, it was, according to the lifeboat crew, "just afloat".

As the lifeboat was leaving the scene, they diverted to another vessel speeding towards the same location, to give advice on the local conditions.

Brian Rankin, the lifeboat's volunteer helm, said: ‘To be called out to the same location in such a short period of time is a concern.

"Again we would like to take this opportunity to remind people to check weather and tide times before venturing out on the water, and the importance of checking local signage and navigation charts for hidden dangers and hazards.

"If you get into difficulty at sea or along the coast, or spot someone else in trouble, always dial 999 and ask for the coastguard."
