Residents in a block of flats in Largs town centre have raised concern after spotting rats in an outdoor area near Main Street.

The issue was raised by a couple living in Manse Court, who spoke to Largs Community Council (LCC) member Andy Adair about their worries.

Mr Adair told LCC's latest meeting that he had approached local North Ayrshire councillors to try and solve the problem.

He also said a 'no litter' sign had been removed from the area, which it's thought may have contributed to the issue.

Largs and Millport Weekly News:

He said: "It seems to be attracting rats and the couple are very concerned. Surely the council could do something about it. One of the issues is that a resident removed a 'No Litter' sign.

Councillor Tom Marshall said: "The council have a pest control service who can send out a pest control officer. They will need to give their name and address."

His colleague, Councillor Alan Hill, said: "They will need to report it. The pest control officers will want to meet them to be shown where the problem is - they can contact the pest control team themselves or contact us."

Cllr Marshall added: "It will cost money as if it is a council property they do it for free, but if it is a private property, there will be a charge between £70-£80.

"Tell the couple to email us and we will arrange a visit."

North Ayrshire Council state on their website: "Owners and occupiers of land have a responsibility to keep the land substantially free from rats and mice.

"Traps can be bought from hardware stores. If numbers are large, professional treatment is advised.

"Our pest control team investigates and, where necessary, treats premises and dwellings where there are infestations of rats and mice."

Pest control for rats affecting domestic accommodation costs £80.90 for up to three visits, according to the NAC website.

North Ayrshire Council have been contacted for comment.
