Roadworks on the A78 which have caused queues for months are to be halted over the festive period.

North coast councillor Todd Ferguson says the lights, which have been in place at the south end of West Kilbride since November, will be taken away this Friday, December 22, before returning on January 10.

The essential drainage works have been taking place near the Waterside Hotel since November 11 and, according to the Roadworks Scotland website, are due to take 63 days to complete.

Cllr Ferguson said: "Amey have confirmed that they will remove the lights at the Waterside on Friday, and they will recommence work on January 10, with the plan to finish in February.

"Following these works, it is planned that the long-awaited pedestrian island programme will commence between Hope Homes and Seamill Hydro.

"Recently, constituents contacted me about the condition of the road just up from Seamill House.

"Amey have investigated and made patch repairs.

"This is also due to be fixed in the new year as part of the long standing improvement works."
