The great storm of 1951 was unforgettable for those who experienced it as Largs Main Street was submerged.
The famous Moorings restaurant and emporium on the Main Street felt the brunt of the deluge, with waist-deep flood water resulting in much of the stock being destroyed.
During Sunday December 30 1951, the spectacular and extensive flood swept 150 yards up Main Street following 90mph gales.
High tide was due at 1.30pm and hampered churchgoers as they tried to return home from Sunday worship.
The sea, which was almost level with the pier, broke in huge waves over the sea walls and prom and burst up Main Street, flooding Bath Street, Fort Street and Gallowgate Street and inundating houses and shops.
Storm boards were hurriedly erected when it was evident that the sea was going to sweep in.
The 'News' reported: 'Storm boards were hurriedly erected when it was evident that the sea was going to sweep in and the rising water was further dammed with newspapers."
Houses in Bath Street suffered in the flood, with one property experiencing seven or eight inches of water in the kitchen area.
