TRAINS serving Largs, Ardrossan and the Three Towns have been suspended again - just hours after services were reintroduced.

ScotRail resumed normal service on the lines to the west of Kilwinning at around 10.30am on Thursday following 24 hours of disruption due to Storm Gerrit.

But the rail operator says trains on the Largs and Ardrossan Harbour routes are once again only running between Glasgow Central and Kilwinning.

The move is the result of more severe weather which ScotRail says is expected to continue until the end of service on December 28.

The move means there are no trains at Stevenston, Saltcoats, Ardrossan South Beach, Ardrossan Town, Ardrossan Harbour, West Kilbride, Fairlie or Largs.

A ScotRail spokesperson said: "We've now got replacement buses at Kilwinning, these'll run between there, Ardrossan and Largs until the line reopens."

Valid train tickets are being accepted on local buses - at least for the time being, with ScotRail warning that Stagecoach will not accept valid rail tickets during the evening peak period.

Services were suspended on the same stretch of line on Wednesday afternoon after heavy rain flooded the railway near Fairlie, before being reintroduced after a safety inspection of the line on Thursday morning.

A ScotRail spokesperson said: "We're unable to run trains between Kilwinning, Largs and Ardrossan again.

"You can use your train tickets on local Stagecoach and McGill's buses and we're trying to get buses of our own.

"Stagecoach won't be able to accept train tickets between 1630 and 1900 today."
