NEW images have been revealed showing one of the few remaining parts of a historic Largs building destroyed during the Second World War.

Little of Brisbane House was left after commandos used the building for target practice during WW2.

However, the historic wine cellar still survives, as these photos by Raibeart MacAoidh of the Largs and Millport Photo Club show.

Brisbane House was built in 1636 by the Kelso family and was acquired by the Brisbane's in 1671.

Largs and Millport Weekly News:

Sir Thomas Macdougall Brisbane was born at Brisbane House, on 23 July,1773, the son of Sir Thomas Brisbane and Dame Eleanora Brisbane.

He was educated in astronomy and mathematics at the University of Edinburgh. He died on January 27, 1860.

Thomas became Governor of New South Wales in 1821 and remained there until he returned to Scotland in December 1825. The river was named after him, and became today’s City of Brisbane and Brisbane River.

And the ruins of the wine cellar still exist at the site of the former Brisbane House, as does the remnants of the Brisbane Observatory, also a ruin.

Largs and Millport Weekly News:

Local historian Richard Topping said: "Lord Brisbane probably had a huge number of visits from other high-ranking military men, famous academics from the worlds of astronomy, physics, and mathematics, plus other members of the landed gentry and politicians.

"Personally, I can't even begin to imagine the quality of wine that was stored here.

"It would have been priceless."

Sir Thomas was also a major benefactor to the town.

Sir Thomas established the Largs Brisbane Academy to give local children the opportunity of a better education, and made provision for a new sewage system in the town to clear the streets of dirty water.

This significantly reduced the prevalence of deadly diseases in the area, including the scourges of cholera and typhoid.

Brisbane in Australia is gearing up to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2032 - and the city wants to bolster its historical links with Largs to put Sir Thomas Brisbane's home town in the spotlight when the city hosts the global sporting spectacle.

Delegates from Brisbane visited Largs in 2023, sending an open letter to the heads of North Ayrshire Council to explain and share their vision, which they hope can strengthen the ties between the towns.
