A race night held at Halkshill Bowling Club in Largs got under starter’s orders to raise more than £5,800 for the Alara’s Little Legs Appeal. A spokesperson for the event organisers thanked those who donated prizes to the raffle, made donations and spent generously on the night. They added: “We had a very generous donation from the Masonic Club of £1,000, Halkshill’s committee donated £700 and everyone on the night dug deep to get us to the sum of £5,837. We are delighted to help Alara and her family get that bit closer to their target.” (Image: Contributed)
A popular Largs chippy was ‘frying high’ after being named as one of the three best in the UK. The Fish Works was the only Scottish business in the running to claim the honour, and would go head-to-head with Codfellas in Ipswich and Henleys of Wivenhoe for the prize. Owners Tiffany and Ross Irvin admitted they were shocked to be so close to being crowned at the best in Britain, with Tiffany revealing: “We’ve never made it to the top ten or the top three before. The whole team are ecstatic.” (Image: Contributed)
At the start of February we reported how Largs Academy pupil Nell McGregor had been chosen to represent Scotland in a home nations pentathlon event. It was the latest honour for the S4 pupil, who began catching the eye in track and field events at the age of nine – though the West Kilbride 15-year-old admitted she was surprised to be picked, because she hadn’t been training specifically for the pentathlon for six months! In February we caught up with the Largs woman who was the first child in Scotland to undergo pioneering open heart surgery. Helen Litherland, formerly Wylie, was thrust into the national spotlight at the age of 12 when she went under the knife to fix a hole in her heart. Helen spoke to the News to look back on the revolutionary 1960 procedure which she said had allowed her to live “every day to the full” – as she celebrated her landmark 75th birthday. In March we caught up with Caledonian MacBrayne worker Gary Ferguson to find out about his plan to walk, cycle, swim and kayak around Cumbrae to help fund the revamp of Millport Town Hall. Gary, 56, from Largs, was, and remains, a well-known charity fund-raiser in the area, and was hoping that friends, family and the wider public would donate to help him reach his £500 target. His dream came true when a total of £670 was contributed to his online fund-raising campaign. (Image: Contributed)
The new £3.7 million Lady Margaret Court housing development in Millport was officially opened by North Ayrshire’s Provost, Anthea Dickson. The 18 new homes formed the second phase of work at St Beya Gardens in the town and include a mix of general needs houses, homes for wheelchair users and amenity bungalows.
