Rail services in Largs, Ardrossan and Ayr faced disruption this morning after a person was "hit by a train" between Johnstone and Kilwinning.
Train services between Glasgow Central and Largs have returned to normal.
A Network Rail spokesperson added: Disruption caused by a person being struck by a train earlier between Johnstone and Kilwinning has now ended. Services between Glasgow Central and Ardrossan Harbour, Ayr and Largs are no longer affected by this problem."
A spokesperson for British Transport Police said: “Officers were called to Glengarnock station at around 6am today following reports of a casualty on the tracks.
“Paramedics also attended, however, sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.
"The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a report will be prepared for the procurator fiscal.”
