A classic Celtic folklore opera show is set to come to Largs later this month.

The Seal Woman, produced by The Scots Opera Project, is coming to the Clark Memorial Church on Saturday, January 27, starting at 7pm.

The show, composed by Marjory Kennedy-Fraser and Granville Bantock, was first performed in 1924.

Based on the folk legend of the mythical Selkie, it was inspired and created using songs from the Scottish Hebrides.

On an uninhabited isle in the Western Isles, an old crone or ‘Cailleach’ sings about local legends of seals that turn into mortal women.

In this legendary tale of two worlds intertwined, The Seal-Woman features some well-known Scottish favourites, such as An Eriskay Love Lilt, The Seal Woman’s Sea Joy and Sea Sounds, making this a perfect opera for newcomers and seasoned operagoers alike.

The cast line-up features mezzo-soprano Sioned Gwen Davies, a former Scottish Opera emerging artist and BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competitor, in the titular role.

Ayrshire tenor David Douglas portrays the lovesick Islesman, with Perthshire soprano Colleen Nicoll as the heartbroken Seal-Sister and Austrian Mezzo-Soprano Ulrike Wutscher embodying the all-knowing Cailleach.

The Scots Opera Project has previously performed on BBC Radio Scotland's Classics Unwrapped and STV’s The Riverside Show.

In 2019, the company received nominations for both a Scots Language Award and a Scottish Gaelic Award in Arts and Culture.

Tickets, which cost £15 per person, are available to book at scotsoperaproject.com
