It was a historic day at Largs railway station this week in 1987 with the introduction of electric trains on the Glasgow route.

The replacement of older and slower diesel trains with faster and more comfortable electric services didn't come without a price - with two train tracks reduced to one because of the need to fit electric pylons in the Fairlie tunnel.

But it was all smiles on the day the first electric train came to town, with ScotRail staff, Brisbane Queen Sharon McMullen and some hand-picked Viking warriors called upon to mark the occasion 37 years ago.

And it was a case of 'bring on the clowns' at a Skelmorlie Gala Day event, safe in the knowledge that there was no Pennywise from the (then) new Stephen King novel 'It' to stalk the streets...something which wouldn't happen until much, much later...
