Memories of the ever popular Millport Raft Race, which has now returned to be an annual fixture on Cumbrae, are recalled in this week's blast from the past, which looks back to 1996.
The event 28 years ago had a big crowd thanks to excellent weather, and there was even a 'royal' presence with the attendance of the Cumbrae Queen Christine Horn to greet all the prizewinners at the end of the traditional seaside shenanigans.

And keeping on a winning theme, Halkshill Bowling Club hosted its Largs Open Bowls Tournament with winners including A. Bradley, C. McAllister, W, Mack and G. Gault, and S. Ferguson and M. Johnston.

Fairlie Library has always been at the heart of the community and pictured are youngsters enjoying a mini Olympics fun day with a clown ball game, but there was certainly no clowning around when the News photographer came to visit.

Largs Rotary members are pictured at a car boot sale which they organised at Barrfields Park, with proceeds going to local charities.

And it was a competitive finale to Millport Bowling Club's Bremner Trophy. The photo shows the winner, Fiona McBride, being presented with the trophy by ladies' captain Mrs T. Welsh, while runner up Jean Kerr looks on.
