OUR latest rummage into the photo archives of the News brings up memories of one of the most popular, and now most-missed, takeaways in the town.

The Fry Fare in Nelson Street is now a Day Today store, and was temporarily an Indian restaurant too.

And it has a historical significance too, as it was home more than 90 years ago to the Nardini family's very first Largs business, with Fry Fare opening under their ownership in 1931, before they moved four years later to their newly-build art deco cafe on the corner of Nelson Street and Greenock Road.

A special advertisement feature for Fryfare appeared in the Largs and Millport News in 2004 and will bring back a lot of memories, and of course, the smell of fresh fish and chips!

As well as offering a mouthwatering array of dishes, including pizza, pasta and your traditional fish supper, you could also walk back in time to the swinging sixties to the delightful old-fashioned cafe which would not look out of place on Happy Days in the back restaurant area - a throwback to the original Nardini ownership days.

Fryfare had been owned by the Bertozzi family since 1979. The continental style and service made it very traditional but it remained unmistakably Largs in flavour.

Giancarlo Bertozzi boasted vast experience in the restaurant trade, working as a bar manager then store manager and cook at the Moorings throughout the 1960s. Father Gianluca and daughter Michaela were behind the popular ‘chippie'.

You can even have experienced the famous deep-fried Mars bar if you so desired - though if you asked nicely at the counter they'd have done you a Snickers instead!
