POLICE in Largs have confirmed they’re planning to step up their high-visibility patrols in the town as the peak of the visitor season approaches.

Big crowds have already been seen in the town on recent weeks, and those numbers are expected to swell further for big events and when the school summer holidays begin at the end of June.

Local police sergeant Donald Fisher told members of Largs Community Council (LCC) that while having more officers on foot patrol during the busiest weeks of the summer may have an effect on other police work, he still plans to ensure that the public’s desire to see more ‘bobbies on the beat’ is satisfied.

Margaret Wood, who sits on LCC’s policing sub-group, asked: "Are we going to see more police about in the late afternoon and the evening time?”

Sergeant Fisher replied: “"Yes, I think so.

"We are recognising we are coming into the better weather. If you look at some of the recent weekends, we have had great weather, the town is mobbed, the prom is packed, and Millport is busy.

"Our priorities then were to try and be out and about, and walking along the prom, to be around the town, and be seen.

“That maybe comes at the expense of some other enquiries, whether it is going to knock on doors and things like that. But we do recognise that people want to see the police out and about, so we try and do that in busy times, like we did at the weekend.”

LCC members recently raised concern at the high number of ‘breach of bail’ offences in the town in recent months, prompting Sergeant Fisher to point out that regular police checks and the “chapping of doors” played a significant role in clamping down on such offences.
