A COMMUNITY group in Largs has earmarked a building in the town centre which it hopes to turn into a community hub for the town.

The Largs Community Development Trust hopes that a new hub in the town could provide a base for services such as citizens' advice and debt management - and even a community radio station.

The Trust is currently working on restoring the Mackerston fountain on the promenade and tidying up the area around Barrfields and putting it to productive use.

It's considering applying for £60,000 from the North Ayrshire Community Investment Fund to move the project forward.

The group has identified a building at 36 Boyd Street which it believes could become a  ‘thriving base’ for the local community.

The funding application will go before the next meeting of the North Coast Locality group.

The trust hopes the new hub will provide a space to host advice sessions provided by groups such as the CHAP housing support service, women's aid and perhaps as a satellite base for credit union facilities.

In addition to the hub, the trust also aims to promote shopping opportunities in the town and to explore new ways of marketing Largs.

The trust is also the parent group of the Visit Largs initiative, being set up to help put the town on the map and promote visiting and tourism opportunities.
