Largs Thistle president Peter Connor says there must to be more discussion on a new pyramid structure in the junior game before any firm decisions can be made on the new set-up.
A total of 99 of the 154 member clubs voted to join the pyramid system earlier this year following a vote.
Largs are entering the new junior West of Scotland Super Premier Division this coming season with a total of 16 clubs.
However, over in the east, 25 clubs have left the junior set-up to play in a new East of Scotland league.
The SJFA have said that following the vote, they now have a mandate in which to examine the possibilities of the West joining a pyramid system, which would possibly see a new league set-up with the top team going into a play-off structure to move up into the senior leagues.
Mr Connor said: “We only want the best for our team, and I think by joining into the pyramid scheme you would need a lot of special licences, and it would be a big shift.
“All these teams in the East have jumped at it, but there have been some high profile teams in the West who are not too keen on it like Auchinleck.
“I think there needs to be a lot more discussion and clarity on
it.
“I think it is a great shame that so many clubs in the East have left the junior set-up. It all seems a big fragmented, and everybody should have got together to discuss it first.
“There are various stadium requirements, and so much work would need to be done at Barrfields, which is in a better position than some other clubs, but even so, we only have a limited number of volunteers, and we are always on the look-out for new committee members.
“However, if a new pyramid system is going to be set up, what is going to happen? You’d have teams getting promoted out of the West of Scotland like Beith or Auchinleck going possibly into the Scottish Third Division, and it would make the West of Scotland league weaker without these teams in the set-up.
“And what would happen to the Scottish Junior Cup which is one of the longest running trophies in the sport?
“It is sad that many big names from the East will not be participating in the Scottish Junior Cup this year, as you always look forward to playing against them — that is the whole point of a ‘Scottish’ Cup.
“I would say that the club are going to take a very cautious approach to it. We need to learn more.”
