Garrison Cup
The annual match between Largs Thistle and Millport curling clubs for the Garrison Cup took place recently on 8th January at Greenacres.
Two teams represented each club, playing two games against both teams from the opposing club.
In the morning session the Largs’s sides skipped by John Thomson and Robin Goodall, both lost their games by 1 shot. Both games finishing 8-7 in Millport’s favour.
Although both games were very close, the morning session ended with Millport in a very strong position having won 4 match points to the Largs’s 0 points.
Millport only need to draw one game in the afternoon session to win the Garrison Cup.
The afternoon matches were split between the two clubs. David Cameron’s Millport side beat John Thomson’s Largs side 8-6 in another close game. In the remaining game the Largs side skipped by Robin Goodall won 12-5 to record Largs only win of the day.
The final tally had Millport with 6 match points and Largs with 2 match points. So Millport won the Garrison Cup, ending Largs run of three successive victories.
Strangely the final shot tally was in Largs favour. Largs had 32 shots to Millport’s 29, but it is the number of games won which is decisive.
The Garrison Cup was presented by Largs Thistle CC President Billy Strang to the Millport CC President Richard Stokes.
The teams for both sides were: Largs A – John Thomson (skip), Jim Johnstone, Billy Strang, Chris Reekie. Largs B – Robin Goodall (skip), Janie McKenzie, Rita Salton, Linn Munton. Millport A – Jimmy Lochridge (skip), Fergus Boyle, Ron Copeland, Richard Stokes. Millport B – David Cameron (skip), Sandy Carmichael, Walter Marshall, Willie McIntyre.
