Largs moved into fourth spot in the Stagecoach Super League First Division this week in 2006 after a five star victory over Lugar.

For the second week in a row they went nap against the opposition with another five goals to add to the five netted against Vale of Clyde last week. Co-bosses Stephen Quigg and Archie Halley handed Craig Dewar a start for the injured Paddy McIlvogue and Mark Andrews continued in the line-up with Brian Robertson still injured and Davie Brolly suspended.

James Marks returned from his ban to take a place on the bench alongside Andy Kean who was back in training with the club.

The home side started well and were rewarded within a few minutes when a ball across the area from striker Craig McGlone was re-directed goalwards by a Lugar defender.

It was McGlone again who capitalised when he converted a cutback from John Robertson with relative ease. Midfielder Paul Young replaced Andrews during the break and it proved to be a critical change.

Largs and Millport Weekly News:

On the hour mark he cracked a free kick off the post and moments later he was fouled inside the box to win what was amazingly Thistle’s fourth penalty in two games.

Skipper Willie Armour, now the top scorer, despatched past keeper Stuart Leavy and the Barrfields’ men were on easy street and cruising towards another win.

Midway through the second half the fans were treated to a real moment of magic from the half-time substitute.

Young brought down a poor punched clearance from the keeper from Armour’s cross around 30 yards from goal. And after spotting keeper Leavy well off his line he flighted the ball over his head and into the empty net. The home side had introduced Marks for Thomas Graham with 20 minutes remaining and ten minutes later Kean also came off the bench to replace Robert Wraith.

A moment of controversy produced the final strike when Largs were awarded an indirect free kick after Lugar keeper Leavy picked up a pass back. The initial shot was blocked before the ball broke out to Marks who crossed for Young to execute a diving header into the net on 85 minutes.

Stuart McPherson was red carded for the visitors in the dying minutes for a foul on Mark McManus, his second booking of the game.

With the division very tight, Largs were showing some good momentum to kick start February.
