Largs Thistle 5 Lugar Boswell 0

My psychic prediction was for a six goal victory for Thistle in this Scottish Junior Cup first round match and although one short of my crystal ball, in truth, it could have been as many as ten.

In spite of their attacking prowess, Largs continue to make a mess of goalmouth chances despite scoring at the start of both halves.

After David Ramsay had hit the side-netting from the kick-off, Thistle netted in the fourth minute when the dynamic Blair Devine crossed low to the far post for top scorer Will Sewell to fire the ball home.

There was an early yellow card for Lugar's McCulloch, who clattered into Darryl Duffy on his first competitive start. Late tackles flew into the home players throughout the game, which was refereed with kid gloves.

A big score seemed on the cards when Thistle made it two in the 19th minute, Sewell cleverly turning his defender before squaring for Jamie Martin to power home from close range.

The classy Duffy was unlucky with a lob which the tall keeper just got to and he was blocked by the keeper minutes later as he ran into the box. There was wave after wave of home attacks but the plucky Lugar guys defended desperately.

Largs and Millport Weekly News:

Just on half-time another Devine run and cross was met by Sewell, but he headed past the post.

When livewire Will was fouled outside the box at the start of the second half Martin took the freekick, which bobbed about, before hitting Corey Hughes and going in for the third goal.

Surely six was on the cards as Thistle piled on the pressure and the corners but Lugar's giant keeper Kirkland had his fair share of luck on numerous occasions.

Largs and Millport Weekly News:

New signing Jamie McLean came on for a battered and bruised Sewell and immediately started a move which ended with a Ramsay effort saved on the line.

However, Ramsay made amends running on to a perfect pass from Craig Forbes, side-stepping the keeper and slotting into the net. Hughes grabbed his second and Thistle's fifth goal in the 70th minutes when he ventured upfield again.

It was just as well I didn't have a bet on for my six goals prediction because near the end a Duffy header hit the bar and a rocket shot from the impressive Devine whizzed wide of the target.

A dominant display in the September sunshine for Largs who only had two fit substitutes on the bench, including keeper Johnstone.
