Inverclyde Sports Centre has won a prestigious accessibility award at a star-studded event.

The local facility was among ten talented winners announced at the Variety Club Disability Sports Awards last night, October 30, in a glittering ceremony hosted by Channel Four's Last Leg presenter Adam Hills MBE, and Vicky Gosling OBE.

It received the Accessible Sporting Venue Award at the prestigious ceremony.

The focus of the world class facility when it was created was to promote inclusivity for athletes, spectators, visitors and employees. It also serves as a retreat for the use of governing bodies of sport, clubs, and a range of partner organisations.

Access routes between accommodation, catering and meeting facilities and the indoor sports facilities are completely seamless.

There are several adjoining bedrooms with hoists, and all rooms can comfortably accommodate two guests using wheelchairs.

The £12 million centre was opened in 2018 after a major investment and re-design.

Barry Fleeting, principal of sportscotland, said: “We are thrilled to have received this award on behalf of sportscotland, following our vision to create an accessible venue – the first of its kind.

Inverclyde had 60 fully adapted residential rooms, facilities and support services in an inclusive and accessible sports environment.

The overall cost is £12 million was funded through Scottish Government Commonwealth Games Legacy Fund, sportscotland and North Ayrshire Council.

Enhanced facilities include a physical preparation centre, a multi-purpose training facilities, 60 fully-accessible en-suite twin bedrooms, changing facilities, dining and conference spaces, bar and café areas, meeting and seminar rooms, and offices.

The overall cost of £12 million was financed through the Scottish Government Commonwealth Games Legacy Fund, sportscotland and North Ayrshire Council.

The new development will also include 200 covers for catering, conference facilities and athlete support services.

Stars attending last night's glittering event included Christine McGuinness, Baroness Tanni-Grey Thompson, Dr Amir Khan, and Rosie Jones, with the awards aiming to give athletes with disabilities and inclusive sports clubs the recognition they deserve.
