Ayrshire padel players feature in Scottish Cup win

The ladies competition saw the West of Scotland Padel Club overcome Edinburgh Sports Club in the capital on Sunday afternoon in a nailbiting tie break decider.

With the match reaching a deadlock of two games apiece, a super tie-break had to be played to decide the outcome, with Meghan and Charlotte winning 10-6.

A West of Scotland Padel Club spokesperson said: "What a day it’s been for WoSP. In addition to our Grade 2 [men's senior tournament] on home ground, our ladies won the Tennis Scotland Padel  Scottish Cup through in Edinburgh.

A quick one-hour practice session took place at the club's North Ayrshire base before the ladies headed through to the final for the big showpiece occasion.

The racket sport is similar to tennis and uses shorter, stubbier racquets, with the ball staying in play for longer thanks to each court's toughened glass walls.

It utilises the same points scoring system as tennis, and is underarm serve only.

The club has members across Ayrshire, including players from Largs, Stewarton and Irvine.

The Ayrshire club, based at Stevenston Industrial Estate, was launched in 2017 by local business entrepreneur David McCulloch as the first of its kind in Scotland.

The club also hosted two senior men's tournaments over the weekend.

The Grade 2 40+ Seniors LTA tournament winners were Gavin and Mark Picken, with John Byrne and Gavin Thomson finishing runners up.

The 50+ competition was won by John Byrne and Gavin Thomson, ahead of Robert Hughes and David McCulloch.
