It’s on us at last: the Euros are here.

The two warm up games for Scotland produced one win and a draw. If the manager got what he wanted out of those games, and the players are ready, then it was a good exercise. The results don’t matter.

I think, though, the goals Finland scored showed our weakness. I don’t think it was a penalty but their player got in there too easy, but then again I expect us not to see as much of the ball against Germany, Switzerland and Hungary as we did against Gibraltar and Finland.

For me that is good for defenders. I feel it focuses you more when you play in defence and you are up against it. Defenders need to want to defend; they need to love that position. I know some managers want to see defenders pushing forward, but for me if Scotland don’t lose goals we don’t lose games.

I don't think anyone can accurately predict our team for the Germany game. Who will start up front? Who will be the central defenders? Six players I think who will start are Gunn, Robertson, Gilmour, McGinn, McTominay and McGregor. After that I don’t know.

Tierney might be a shout but he then plays out of his true position. At right back, Ralston or McCrorie? For the central defenders, I have no idea who Clarke will play.

Up front does he play Christie off Shankland? Does he go for movement and surprise us all with Conway or Adam in the team? If it were me, I would start the game with Gunn, McCrorie, Hendry, Cooper, Robertson, McGinn, McGregor, McTominay, Gilmour, Christie and Conway.

The result of the Germany game and the Switzerland v Hungary game I think will very much influence Scotland's starting line-up for the Switzerland game.

As for who might win the tournament, I think it's too early to call. I don’t see it being Scotland. Could it be Croatia? They always seem to be there or thereabouts but never quite manage it. They are in a group with Spain and Italy, which is a tough prospect.

Could England do it? I hope not. For me it's most likely to be Germany or France.

It was reported at the weekend that former Partick Thistle and Liverpool defender Alan Hansen is seriously ill. Alan made the game look easy, though the collision between Hansen and team-mate Willie Miller which allowed the USSR to score against Scotland in the 1982 World Cup is an abiding memory of mine. I was in the stadium in Malaga that night and the result meant Scotland were out of the tournament.

He never made the squad for the 1986 tournament in Mexico after being left out by Alex Ferguson, which was a big shock at the time.

My thoughts go out to Alan and his loved ones.
