A Largs racing driver enthusiast is moving up the gears in the racing world after launching a social media platform to promote young racing drivers in Scotland.
Glenn Alcock has set up‘SuperfastScots’ facebook, instagram and twitter pages which profile the talented young Scottish racing drivers coming through the ranks, and also support charities such as The Jim Clark Trust and the Scottish Disabled Motorsport Association.
However, Glenn had no idea that his fascination with all things F1 would enable him to meet racing stars, and even be invited to some of major industry events at home and abroad.
Indeed, his enthusiasm knows no bounds, and Glenn has recently passed his Race Driving test so that he compete in the sport.
Glenn’s interest in motor racing stemmed from his grandfather, George Jackson, who lived in Largs, but passed away when Glenn was only seven years of age.
Glenn said: “I have always had a passion for motor sport, and things just escalated from there
A few years ago, I became aware of a young Scottish driver called Ciaran Haggerty who is a rising star. I have always wanted to drive a formula one car and in 2015 I made that happen in Monza which hosts the Italian Grand Prix, and it was a dream come true. I got a book which is the only book written by Ayrton Senna, ‘Driving Principles’ and passed the book on to him via his father. His dad appreciated that and I found myself at Indianapolis 500 for the 100th running of it. Dario Franchitti then got in touch with me which I couldn’t believe, and after the race, we ended up hanging out with him for a few beers. Dario is a hero of mine.
“How many people know about the next generation of racing drivers coming through? Scotland has a great history of motor sports going back to Jackie Stewart, Colin McRae, David Coulthard, Alan McNish etc; so I came up with the idea of SuperFastScots, and started posting the results. It now has around 2000 followers and has been going for around a year.
“As a result of that, I have been invited to various events, and I have been seeing the other side of it. I have had a bit of experience at driving cars, and I have my racing licence, so I did a feature on how people can get involved and become a driver. For me, I thought it was a way of getting into motor sport, which has various categories, and you can have a very successful career as a sportscar driver, and there are lots of opportunities out there for people.”
“I am getting great support from Dario Franchitti, Allan McNish, and the Knockhill Racing Circuit, and whenever I go up I get access to the commentary box, and have carried out a lot of interviews to get young racers’ personalities out there.”
And Glenn’s publicity has driven up plenty of interest.,so much so that he was invited to the recent Scottish Motor Racing Club Awards at the Grand Sheraton at Edinburgh.
Allan McNish even got Glenn up on stage because of all the good work he had been doing in promoting the sport during one of the racing club events.
Glenn said: “I couldn’t believe it - I didn’t even know that Allan knew who I was, so it is great to get that kind of recognition and support from within the racing circuit.”
