League leaders Petershill played their get out of jail card as they hung on for a precious point at Barrfields in a fast flowing encounter.
Thistle will wonder how they didn’t manage to net a win after hitting the post, having a goal ruled out for offside and generally bossing most of this match in an impressive display.
But Petershill showed a steely reserve, and it was the visitors who had the first chance as Chris Hall headed over from close range after a swerving ball on the right from Jordan Hardie.
Largs opened the scoring on six minutes after a corner kick from Alex McWaters on the left. Scott Adam cracked home a superb drive first time from the right hand side from 10 yards out. It was his 13th strike of the season.
Jamieson then headed wide from a corner as Largs looked for a second.
Adam sent a dipping volley from distance just wide of the right post on 38 minutes which would have been a spectacular strike.
Petershill as an attacking threat had hardly featured in the first half but nearly walked in level at half-time as Hardie broke clear but Thistle keeper Blair Cousar, taking over from Sean Graham who was on holiday, pulled off an accomplished block.
The yellow cards were mounting for Largs in an exciting second half, with McWaters curling a long distance effort just wide of the right post.
There was some head tennis in the Petershill box with Iain Fisher’s two efforts cleared off the line, and then Scott Adam burst through on the left, and found Nicky Jamieson to convert from what was deemed an offside position by assistant ref Rebecca Jamieson - no relation, and no goal!
Petershill won a free kick from around 30 yards out and Chris Wilson, for the second week running, scored with a sensational thunderbolt free kick to give Cousar little chance on 65 minutes.
Largs then threw the proverbial kitchen sink at Petershill in the final 20 minutes, with cute play from Adam on the left cueing up Jamie Campbell near the penalty spot but he smacked his effort off the post.
Peasy keeper John Gibson produced a marvellous block to deny Campbell who was through yet again, and then in the final minutes twinkle toes from McWaters left Petershill chasing shadows, and the Thistle forward sent a rasping drive inches wide of the right post from 20 yards.
It couldn’t have been much closer.
Both sides had to settle for a share of the spoils in a match which felt more like a cup encounter than a league match.
Thistle actually moved up into a promotion place in fourth spot to edge out Troon, although the South Ayrshire side have three games in hand. Largs only have three home games left (Kilsyth, Cambuslang and Larkhall), and seven away (Cambuslang, Kello, Rutherglen, Troon, Irvine Meadow, Cumbernauld and Shettleston).
Largs: Cousar, Fisher, McMaster, Jamieson, Fleming, Little, Orr, Campbell, Adam, McWaters, McKie. Subs: Muir, Struthers, Burden, McVey, Ashe.
