A BUS route between Largs and Glasgow is being increased to help shoppers during the festive season.

More services on the Clyde Flyer 901 and 906 services, which carry locals and tourists between the seaside town and the city, will run from Wednesday to Saturday from November 29 until December 23.

Operator McGill's say they hope it will make it easier for people to do their Christmas shopping, attend festive events and see their family and friends.

The additional buses will run as duplicates from mid-morning to mid-afternoon, giving customers more connections to and from Glasgow and are in response to growing numbers using the popular coastal bus route - not least from under 22s and over 60s who benefit from free nationwide bus travel.

We previously told that the bus routes, which also serve Wemyss Bay, Gourock (901 only), Greenock, Port Glasgow and Braehead, was hailed as the third most scenic in the UK.

Alex Hornby, managing director at the McGill's Group, said: “Clyde Flyer is one of our best-loved routes and performs an essential transport link for commuters, day trippers and tourists alike - all year round - and we’re delighted to offer more buses, more seats and more capacity during the busy, festive season.

“These extra buses are further evidence of McGill’s doing what’s right to support local economies in the vital Christmas trading season and give the coastal communities in Largs, Inverkip, Wemyss Bay, Gourock, Greenock and Port Glasgow extra confidence in using public transport as a viable alternative to the car or staying at home.

“We continue to see strong growth in customers on our convenient, four times-an-hour daytime timetable - so much so that this extra capacity is very much needed.

"It’s important that we give our customers the confidence to use the bus - particularly given the ongoing popularity of free travel for under 22s and over 60s and the attractiveness of destinations along this busy route.”
