The Cumbrae Parish Church new build project is carrying on apace with a range of fundraising activities.

At present, Cumbrae Parish Church is closed, and services take place in the DA Hall but a fundraising project has been underway to set up a new church on the island.

A statement from the church read: "It is with some satisfaction that we can announce the achievement of a vital milestone in the process of providing a new community parish church on the Island of Cumbrae.

"The completion of the sale of the church manse, together with some generous donations, and ongoing fundraising events, will enable us to proceed to the next stage of our plans. "Encouraged by these developments and the continuing devotion of the many faithful organisers and supporters, we can now see our vision becoming a reality.

"The Reverend Markus Thane was fully supportive of this project and we miss his drive and enthusiasm. He is also missed by our friends in St. John’s Church in Largs and we are grateful to them for their generous support of our project.

"In addition to those who are producing finance, we acknowledge the support of the Presbytery of Ardrossan, and the General Trustees and staff of the Church of Scotland."

The overall budget for the new build is £750,000, and McLean Architects have been appointed.

Bob Morris, Project Leader, said: "The general fund, investments, new build fund and the sale of manse, is totalling £600,000. The balance of £150,000 will come from a loan, trustee’s grant, local fundraising and grant applications.

"This latest project started for us in September 2014, when we decided to amend the project. We have secured the agreement to the amendments from the Kirk Session, Congregational Board, Trustees of the Church of Scotland and Presbytery of Ardrossan. Our aim is to finish the construction by mid 2017."

The new church will include a multi-functional area – seating 100–120, Vestry, kitchen – light refreshment, plant room, toilets, meeting room, storage, car parking for 30 cars. It is planned for the new facility to be accommodated on available land next to the primary school on Bute Terrace.
