While the local area has been buffeted by Storm Henry’s 90mph winds, a fresh storm is brewing in Fairlie on Monday over news of another giant turbine proposal for Hunterston.
Scottish Enterprise have put in application to North Ayrshire Council to build a replacement 220m structure at the test turbine site.
The matter was discussed at Fairlie Community Council on Monday.
Resident Steven Graham, a former community councillor, said that effectively Scottish Enterprise were asking for a five year extension at the current site - with Millport, Largs. Arran, and Bute all getting an eyeful of the towering turbines.
Steve said: “In 2012, one of the reasons we reluctantly accepted the test turbine development was that it would be for a five year period only. We are now presumably talking about this third turbine going up 2018 and run it for five years until 2023.
“It will probably take around two years to get commissioned - effectively you have more than doubled the time frame. I just think that is being dishonest. Why would you accept anything that is coming out as a planning condition?
“There was an earlier inquiry over around 13 x 100m high turbines at Hunterston which the Reporter rejected on the basis of the environmental and visual impact, and these things are much bigger, and are just being put through wily-nilly.
“This third turbine is 220m - it is 10 per cent higher than the ones that have already been permitted.
“I am pro-wind turbine generally, but two things worry me - the inconsistent approach to planning, and the time frame being doubled - it damages people’s confidence in the planning process how it is being manipulated in this way.”
