More bobbies on the beat, and on bike patrol, is the concept behind a new community cop scheme launched this week.

A strong focus on crime prevention is the main aim of the new set-up designed to complement the traditional response and community police responder teams, and provide increased foot and cycle patrols in local communities.

The newly formed local police team will work closely with community, local groups and partners, in newly formed 'locality partnerships' covering the North Coast area of Largs, Fairlie and Skelmorlie, and Cumbrae.

Chief Superintendent Gillian MacDonald, Divisional Commander for Ayrshire Division, commented: "I believe that it will support meaningful engagement with communities, closer partnership working and the delivery of better outcomes for local people.

"I am excited by the prospect and look forward to seeing the approach progress."

The team will be overseen by a community policing inspector and a dedicated sergeant, and will offer opportunities to provide services that are locally influenced with a 'strong focus on prevention and reducing inequalities'."

Largs Police Inspector Joe Conway said it will provide 'more visible' policing in Largs, with the community officers being tasked to deal with any particular crime trends, and public reassurance campaigns. He also said that they would deal with illegal parking,

Residents are encouraged to speak with officers, discuss any local concerns or alternatively call 101.
