An elderly resident of a Largs street, known as Coffin Alley, has hit out at the health hazard of refuse bins on the pavements.

Mr James Scully of Seamore Street, went to Largs Community Council meeting last Thursday to protest at the way residents' bins were forced to stay outside their doors and windows.

Brandishing a petition, Mr Scully, who is in his 70s, told the meeting that he had put a video, called 'Is It Right?' on YouTube.

He said: "I've had to help a disabled man get round the bins on the pavement, and there's mums with prams who have to go on the road. I am not prepared to wait until September for North Ayrshire Council to take action."

Elected councillor Alan Hill said that a council officer had met with Mr Scully to look at the potential of using the coffin-shaped centre of the street for the bins. However, they feared that people would treat it as a fly tip site.

Mr Scully commented that there was room to accommodate the bins which, at present, had to sit under front windows.

"It's a health hazard. If they open the windows they get blue bottles. It's a disgrace where  the bins have to sit all day."

Community Council chairman Douglas Blair asked the elected councillors to pursue the problem.

"We're asking for a response from North Ayrshire Council. A pavement should be kept clear as a pavement."
